Banking on Bahrain

London Stock Exchange
Tuesday 28th March 2006
Bahrain is the leading financial services hub in the Middle East. Faced with numerous challenges in recent years, the long-established financial center has displayed an impressive ability to renew itself and to strengthen its leadership. This island of just 600,000 inhabitants with less oil reserves than its neighbours has one of the region’s most diversified economies. It is open, tax-free, provides a high-skilled labour force and offers a solid legal environment.

While offshore banking is one of its traditional specialties, Bahrain has recently evolved into one of the world’s most pre-eminent centers for Islamic banking. Islamic insurance is also on the rise, with Bahrain on the cutting-edge of product innovation in a market characterized by increased demand. The Bahrain Monetary Agency has recently renewed and considerably improved its already solid legal environment for financial activities. The country’s banks are actively investing at regional level. Increased domestic needs in energy and water and further diversification strategies are bound to make project finance another key specialty of Bahrain.
